My career is just past the 25-year mark and I’m celebrating with my most diverse
disc yet. I’ve always enjoyed an assortment of music, however my recording legacy
to date has fallen squarely in the “traditional and original acoustic blues” camp.
I’ve lived in Floyd County, Virginia for eight years, and have soaked up songs and
licks from its eclectic musical community. This disc reflects the current
“blues & roots” approach of my live shows and features fellow travelers from Floyd
and beyond.
As I expand my listening and repertoire, I hear interconnections and common roots
within traditional American musical styles. Musicians have always absorbed and
assimilated influences despite racial, social or economic barriers. This, I believe,
is why the music has been, and continues to be, so vibrant and relevant. Some
folks prefer having their music tied up into a neat box, clearly labeled for them.
I've always trusted my audience to respond to music on its own merit.
The generous support I’ve received from venues, audiences, the media and
musicians in southwest Virginia is validation that folks respond to “good music,”
regardless of labels imposed by others. I'm thankful to have a musical life without
compromising my artistic vision or professional principles.
I have been enriched by the music and musicians of southwest Virginia and have
tried to contribute to the musical community in turn. With this disc I hope to bring
this music to a wider audience here in Old Dominion and beyond.
