Blue Mule takes its name from the Peter Rowan song
“Blue Mule”, a popular tune played by Peter with the bands Muleskinner and Old & In The Way (Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, Vassar Clements, et al) in the 1970’s, a time when the “Newgrass” and “New Acoustic” movements were coming into being. Blue Mule aspires to a modern interpretation of the fusion of styles that emerged from that period, as well as later influences such as Sam Bush, Bela Fleck and many others. With a background in and a respect for traditional Bluegrass music, Blue Mule’s sound also encompasses what the band calls BlueJazz, BlueRock, BlueCountry, and BlueBlues.

“Scratchy” features 12 tunes ranging from Merle Haggard’s “Working Man Blues”) to the Doobie Brothers ‘ “Last Train Runnin’”, with a bonus live recording of the Greatful Dead tune “Deal”. Also featured are 8 Blue Mule originals from the “hardgrass”-sounding “Scratchy”, “Charlie McGuire”, “Kitty Creek” and “Questions”, to the Celtic “Hills Of Glenmorgan”.
